As much as there is to do in a given day, there is always a need for volunteers to help out. Judson ISD has some wonderful volunteers that help our students and staff day in and day out. From lunch duty to reading aloud to a class, or just comforting a student who is having a bad day. These people are invaluable and they do it because they love children and want to help any way they can. Judson ISD hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Banquet at Judson Early College Academy recently as a modest way of saying 'thank you' to each one of them. You are a big part of making JISD roll. There will be more photos and content in the upcoming April issue of the Judson Post.

JISD Special Olympics is a district-wide sports program for children with intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities, providing athletic training and competitions to 350 athletes from 27 JISD School.

On April 16, 2019, 335 Judson ISD Special Olympic student/athletes were joined by 250 Student volunteers participated in Day 1 of our 15th Annual Track & Field competition at Rutledge Stadium. Day 2 will take place Wednesday, April 24, 2019, with Field Events and relays. Thanks to our outstanding student volunteers, sponsors, teachers, nurses, bus drivers, and Special Olympics coaching staff the event was another example of the BEST of Judson ISD!

Our athletes trained for 8 weeks and were more than ready to show what they are capable of doing. Our athletes displayed determination, courage, and enjoyment in their individual quests. But more importantly, there were new friendships formed and old friendships renewed, as the student volunteers and athletes encouraged and supported each other.

In the 2019-2020 school year, we will form our first Unified Sports Teams. Judson High School Bowling Team will partner with our Special Olympics athletes at Area 20 and State Competitions. Unified Sports Teams provide more meaningful interaction for our students as they work cooperatively in competitive situations. We invite ALL of Judson ISD to join us as we work, play and live UNIFIED!

The Masters Elementary National Elementary Honor Society's theme this year is “Kids Helping Kids.” This year these amazing students spearheaded two community events that contributed to that mission. First, NEHS students held a family night at Mr. Gattis for which a percentage of the proceeds were given to San Antonio’s Rainbow Room, a 24/7 emergency resource center for children under the care of Child Protective Services. Masters raised just over $200. The NEHS also hosted the United Way of San Antonio Shoebox Project. 101 shoeboxes were filled with personal care and basic needs items for children in shelters. What a great effort by these students and families!

A number of students from the JECA (Judson Early College Academy) Key Club joined with the Psi Alpha Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. to participate in their bi-monthly “Adopt A Spot” community cleanup in February. Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to offer service, build character, and develop leadership. These students took an opportunity to work with one of the city’s leading fraternal nonprofit organizations whose focus has been community improvement since 1911. Key Club volunteers were greeted by multiple business owners and local residents of the area. They then got to see the immediate and positive impact that their community cleanup involvement made.

Led by its officers and club sponsor, Coach J. Coleman, JECA’s Key Club goals for the school year are to maintain a positive presence in the community, to continue to grow as student leaders, and be productive members of the San Antonio community for years to come.
